and Family Bio
|
|
My name is David
Frydman
and this has been my
second year on the Board of Directors of DSOSN. I am originally
from New Hempstead, NY but I have been living in Las Vegas since 1996.
I am currently an Elementary School Principal at Helen M.
Jydstrup
Elementary School. My wife Lauren is
an Elementary School Counselor at Kay Carl Elementary School.
In December 2008, 6 weeks
prior to her due date, my wife gave birth to 2 beautiful boys; Ari and
Noah. When you give birth to twins, things happen very quickly in
the operating room. Lauren had an unplanned Cesarean Section
because Ari was breached. Ari came out first and 4 nurses
attended to him very quickly. I was being congratulated by many
people I didn't know. One minute later, Noah came out and he was
attended to just as quickly. However, the nurses and the doctors seemed
a little bit more concerned with Noah. They were checking his
hands and feet and whispering to one another. When I asked if
everything was okay I was told that the doctor would talk to me.
A while later, while Lauren and I were still processing
everything that happened during the day, a doctor came in and very
"matter of
factly
" let us know that
he suspected that Noah was with Down Syndrome. He acted as if
this was a death sentence and let us
know
what
being with Down Syndrome would mean for Noah medically. He told
us that there would be a good chance Noah would have congenital heart
defects, low muscle tone, hearing and vision problems, thyroid
problems, intestinal abnormalities, seizure disorders, respiratory
problems, obesity, an increased susceptibility to infection, and a
higher risk of childhood leukemia. What he neglected to tell us
is how amazing of a child Noah would be. He forgot to tell us
that Noah would try, try, and try until he accomplished things like
crawling, feeding himself, and standing up. What he did not
mention is that we would meet supportive and incredible people through
the Down Syndrome Organization. Noah and Ari are now 2.5 years
old and both of them are very healthy boys. They constantly get
one another into trouble just like true brothers. I'm in
trouble!
I'm very honored and
fortunate to be a part of this organization and to work with some great
people. If you every need to get a hold of me, you can email me
at
dfrydman@dsosn.org
.
Hopefully I will have the opportunity to meet all of your
families shortly at the next event.

I wanted to take
the opportunity to introduce myself and give you an overview of what the
new Board of Directors have been working on for the past couple of
months.
The new Board of Directors of DSOSN were voted
on in Spring 2011. Our main goal has been to support the mission and
vision of the organization by helping to provide families with Down
Syndrome, therapies, support, and education. During this economic
recession, we need to find creative ways to raise funds so that we can
achieve our goals. It is also extremely important for us to have an
active membership and consistent attendance to our events, fundraisers,
and socials. We are looking for families to provide feedback and to
serve on committees.
Here are some things to look forward to during the 2011-2012 year:
-
Monthly guest speakers
and education/information
-
Quarterly new parent

D.A.D.S.
Gathering (Dads Appreciating Down Syndrome)

Every Fourth Thursday of the Month, 6:30 p.m.
Jackson's Bar and Grill
6020 W. Flamingo Road (NE Corner
of Flamingo /Jones)
Dads Appreciating
Down
Syndrome,
or D.A.D.S. is an organization
of fathers of children who happen to have Down syndrome.
We hesitate to call our self a "support group," even though we
do, in many ways, support each other. We prefer to think of
D.A.D.S. as an "action group." You won't find us in
a church basement drinking warm coffee and whining about having children
with Down syndrome. Instead, you'll find us out in the community
coaching our kid's sports teams, participating in our children's IEPs,
volunteering at local Down syndrome fundraising events, and even
sponsoring fundraising events of our own.
We host regular
meetings where our members come together to share insights and
experiences. Face it: there are certain responsibilities
that generally fall on the shoulders of the father. Having a
child with special needs often affects how we approach
those responsibilities. We can invite expert speakers to
discuss medical, educational, financial, social, and many other issues
that affect our children's lives. And of course, we share stories
and experiences that are unique to fathers of children with Down
syndrome. Your colleagues at the office may not understand your
excitement when your 5-year old makes "
poopie
"
on the toilet for the first time, but other D.A.D.S. will, because we've
all been there.

DIMES FOR DOWN
SYNDROME
|
|
The 2011-
2012 Dimes for Down Syndrome Campaign will begin
in
September right after the start of the new
school year. This campaign is offered to schools and businesses
that want an easy and fun way to raise funds for the programs and
services of DSOSN.
Dimes for Down Syndrome is
a community service project for school
age children where students bring in their loose change for a two week
period of time designated by schools who register. The top
fundraising class in each school receives a special party. Since
the campaign was implemented in 2006 it has generated over $40,000 to
help those affected by Down syndrome.
Businesses can
also participate in the Dimes for Down Syndrome campaign by offering
either danglers in their place of business for a donation or by placing a
coin collection container in their establishment.
If you are a
school or business interested in participating in Dimes for Down
Syndrome, please contact
Deann
Cline at
